Safety Data Sheets (SDS, formerly MSDS) are legally required documents that communicate hazard information for chemical substances and mixtures. Under GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals), every SDS must contain 16 specific sections in a prescribed order. Employers must maintain accessible SDS for every hazardous chemical in the workplace, and suppliers must provide them to downstream users before or at the time of first delivery.
The 16 GHS-required sections cover: identification, hazard identification, composition/ingredients, first-aid measures, firefighting measures, accidental release measures, handling and storage, exposure controls/PPE, physical and chemical properties, stability and reactivity, toxicological information, ecological information, disposal considerations, transport information, regulatory information, and other information including revision dates.
SpecIQ generates complete 16-section Safety Data Sheets that follow GHS formatting requirements. Chemical manufacturers and distributors can produce SDS for new products or update existing sheets when formulations change — in minutes rather than the hours or days required by manual authoring. The structured output ensures no required section is accidentally omitted, reducing compliance risk.
